Don't lose your receipts when you lose your phone

Short answer: a receipt that only exists on one phone doesn't exist reliably. Phones get stolen, dropped in water, wiped for a trade-in, or simply die. Backup is what turns "I had that receipt" into "I still have that receipt" — and it takes one tap to set up.

Local-first, which is how Resiboo stores everything by default, means your data lives on your device and works with no signal. It does not mean the data is safe from the device disappearing. Those are two different problems, and backup is what solves the second one.

What backup actually is here

This isn't live sync between devices — it's transfer-to-new-device. One phone is active at a time. You back up an archive, and either the app finds it automatically on a fresh install or you restore it by hand. That's a deliberately simple model: no conflict resolution between two phones editing the same receipt at once, because that situation never happens.

The archive itself is a single file — every receipt, every photo in full quality, every category, tag, and correction you've made — bundled together. Nothing is encrypted, on purpose: the file is meant to live inside storage that's already private (your own iCloud, your own Google Drive, or a file you personally hold onto), and a forgotten backup passphrase is a worse way to lose your receipts than an unencrypted zip sitting in your own account.

Local backup: free, manual, always available

Settings → Backup → Back Up Now builds the archive and hands it to your phone's normal share sheet. From there it's up to you — AirDrop it to a laptop, upload it to any cloud drive yourself, email it to yourself, save it to Files. This path is free with no cap, works on both platforms, and needs no account.

The tradeoff is that it's manual. Nothing backs itself up in the background unless you connect a cloud destination (below) — so a local-only backup is only as current as the last time you tapped the button.

Connecting iCloud or Google Drive, and Automatic Backup

Connecting iCloud or Google Drive directly — so Resiboo writes the backup into your own cloud storage without the share-sheet detour — is a Resiboo Plus feature, as is Automatic Backup: a toggle plus a schedule (Daily, Every 3 Days, or Weekly) that runs in the background with no app open. The OS decides the exact moment within that window rather than a fixed clock time, and the task never runs while Local is selected or the toggle is off.

If you're not on Plus, this is the one thing local backup can't do for you — everything else (the backup file itself, restoring it, moving to a new phone) works exactly the same either way.

Restoring: merge or replace

Two ways to get an archive back in:

• Automatic detection on a fresh install. If you're restoring into a phone connected to the same iCloud or Google Drive the backup came from, Resiboo finds it and offers to restore before you've even opened the app properly.
• Restore from a file, under Settings → Backup, for everything else — an AirDropped archive, one attached to an email, a backup made on a different account.

Either way, you choose Merge (adds the backup's receipts to whatever's already on the device) or Replace (wipes the device first — with a confirmation that names exactly what it's about to delete, so this isn't a silent overwrite). Restore is free and works regardless of which provider the original backup used.

A backup habit that actually holds up

• Back up right after a big batch of scanning — after digitizing a drawer of old receipts, for instance — not just on a random schedule.
• Before any phone change — a factory reset, a trade-in, a repair that might wipe the device. This is the moment local-only backups get forgotten until it's too late. That includes a shared shop or counter phone — see logging GCash and Maya payments for a small shop — where a swap or a staff handover is exactly when a month of sales records goes missing if nobody backed it up first.
• Confirm the backup actually left the phone. A file sitting only in the share sheet's "recents" isn't backed up anywhere else yet — send it somewhere, or connect a cloud destination so it happens automatically.
